Speaking like a confident leader

As a leader, you must be able to both "walk the walk" and "talk the talk." Communication is a key component of becoming a successful leader, which is why many professionals seek to hone this skill. Though you can dress and look like a leader, you must also be able to effectively command and relate to your staff when you speak. Otherwise, your employees may become discontent, take advantage of you, or struggle to perform their job to the best of their abilities.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself about how you can begin talking like a confident leader:

Are your thoughts both inspiring and concrete?
When you hold a meeting, you should use language that both inspires your staff and provides them with a concrete picture of what you want from them. Don't feel the need to overcompensate through speaking in overly descriptive phrases, as this will both alienate and confuse your audience. Also, don't just talk with conviction, but back it up with a straightforward goal or idea. Your employees should not leave a conversation or meeting unsure about what they are required to accomplish.

Are you gliding over tough issues or topics?
No one wants to be the bearer of bad news. However, if you are failing to adequately address tough situations or problems, you are doing a disservice to yourself and your staff. If there are shortcomings in your office, you can only fix them through directly addressing them and encouraging your staff to change or do better. Though it may be difficult, don't let bad news keep you from speaking like a strong leader.
