Maintaining confidentiality as a child care professional

As a child care professional, you may come into contact with sensitive information regarding parents or children. In order to protect yourself, your staff, and the children, here are a few steps to take to ensure that you adhere to state policies and avoid disclosing confidential details: 

  • Be fully informed: You must be diligent in adhering to and keeping up with your state's guidelines for confidentiality. If you are unsure about your state's regulations for privacy at your child care facility, visit the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education website to learn more. The more informed you are, the less likely confidential information will accidently be revealed.
  • Lock away any sensitive information: It's wise to store all documents containing personal information about the parents or children in a locked filing cabinet or drawer. This way all of this information will be not be easily accessible to prying eyes. 
  • Create a privacy policy: This policy can include the laws set by your state and clearly outline your own business policies. Be sure to go over it thoroughly with your staff to ensure that there is no room for confusion in the future. Have the parents sign and bring back one copy of the policy and keep another copy at home for reference. Regularly remind your staff of any updates or even go over old regulations to maintain the best environment for confidentiality.
