Improve Indoor Classroom Safety with Online Child Care Training

Make sure to add these points to your classroom safety checklist.

Through online CDA Training or an Annual Subscription, you learn how to become an effective teacher and leader. Part of this training includes learning how to create a safe learning environment. A safe classroom assures families that they can trust you. Most importantly, it helps to prevent injuries and keep chidlren safe. Keep the tips below in mind when creating or redesigning your classroom.

Tip One: Use an Indoor Safety Checklist

At ProSolutions Training, we have put together an indoor safety checklist. You can use this list before welcoming students into your classroom. This list includes the following steps:

  1. Furniture Placement. Make sure chairs, tables, shelves, and other classroom furniture is sturdy and stable. You want to avoid hazards from furniture falling over or little feet tripping on it.
  2. Check for loose wood. If you have wooden items, make sure the surface is smooth. Double check that there is no risk of splinters.
  3. Minimize sharp edges. If there are sharp edges on bulletin boards or furniture, get rid of those items or add cushioning. This can be essential for protecting the heads of young children from injuries.
  4. Stabilize all hanging objects to ensure they won't fall down.
  5. Child proofing. Check throughout your room, especially on the floor or where items have been hung, to make sure there aren’t any fallen or visible tacks or nails sticking out that could potentially hurt children.

Tip Two: Take Classes Focused on Safety

As you earn your CDA certification or take courses in your Subscription, be sure to check out the following courses on safety in the child care setting:

Essentials of Indoor Safety — This two-hour course goes over all the essentials needed to create a safe classroom environment. These include common indoor hazards, as well as different codes and regulations you should know before starting your career as an educator.

Essentials of Outdoor Safety — Learning doesn't just happen within four walls. Your students also need to get outside for learning and recreational activities. Of course, this environment requires its own safety considerations and this course covers the most common topics of outdoor safety.

Emergency Preparedness: Better Safe Than Sorry — Although you do your best to create a safe environment, accidents can still happen. If they do occur, it is important to ensure you are prepared. This hour-long course shares best practices to help prepare for some of the most common emergencies. Even if you never use your emergency kit or skills, it can be reassuring to know that you have them. With this course, you will be able to learn the essentials.

Responding to Medical Emergencies — This safety course focuses on the skills and knowledge you need to respond quickly and efficiently to medical emergencies. You will learn about common injuries, what to do should a child become injured, and also how to prevent injuries.

Water Safety: Preventing Injury and Illness — Taking your students to the pool or the splash park can be fun, but before you embark on these activities, you need to know how to protect your charges. In this hour-long course, you will learn to recognize water hazards, spot the common signs of drowning, and get tips on creating an Emergency Action Plan for water safety.

As you work on your online training, you will also take a courses on Bloodborne Pathogens, Transportation Safety, and Preventing Foodborne Illnesses in Child Care Settings. At ProSolutions Training, we offer all the courses you need to obtain or renew your CDA certification. To learn more, contact us today.
