Are you unsure about how to talk about mental health? For too long, the topics of mental health and trauma have been taboo. In general, when people think about health, they think about physical health and wellness. They focus less on mental health.
Mental health affects our social and emotional well-being. Focusing on mental health is crucial at every stage of life, from babies to adults. Developing strong mental health is critical to a healthy life.
Recently, there has been a shift in how we as a culture look at, respond to and treat mental health issues. In the last year, we've seen a huge mental strain affect many people across the country in part due to the pandemic.
Because of the increased strain of the past years, now is the time to be proactive about mental health and trauma.
Mental Health in Childhood
Kids’ mental health is an essential subject. According to the CDC’s Children’s Mental Health page, “mental health in childhood means reaching developmental and emotional milestones, and learning healthy social skills and how to cope when there are problems.”
Stress on young children can be a heavy burden. It’s important for educators to understand and recognize this stress, so they can help children. Adults also need to understand how stress affects the day-to-day of their own life.
Kid’s Mental Health and Trauma Course Package
This 5-hour course package provides an overview of the effects of trauma on children. It also highlights the importance of children's mental health. The courses in this package will cover:
- Identifying strategies for helping children cope with anxiety
- Empowering children, building resilience, and focusing on strengths through trauma-informed and asset-informed classrooms
- Understanding the effects of toxic stress on children's mental health and future outcomes
- Developing techniques to help children understand and discuss traumatic experiences in developmentally appropriate ways
- Creating strategies to build a mindful classroom
There are many mental health activities for kids discussed in this coursework. For example, you’ll learn about easy-to-implement mindfulness practices.
Mindfulness is the process of being aware of what is in your mind at the present moment without judgment. Being aware of what is happening in your thoughts is important in self-regulation and self-reflection.
Activity Example: Breathing Buddy
Have the child place a favorite doll/toy/stuffed animal on their belly. Ask them to pay attention to how their breath moves their breathing buddy up and down on their belly.
