Best Summer Safety Tips for Child Care Providers

Summer Safety Tips

As a child care provider, you know that warmer weather brings both fun opportunities and a number of safety risks.

Summer brings a lot of fun. Running through the sprinkler, swimming, and playing outside are all classic parts of a traditional summer, but as you are training for child care jobs, you also need to think about the importance of summer safety. Take a look at these essentials.

Prepare for the Risks of Summer

Unfortunately, there are a number of potential safety risks associated with summer. One of the biggest risks is the sun. It feels great after a long winter, but it can be damaging. To protect your students, apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outside. That gives it time to soak into the skin. But remember, it can wear off after a while. Always re-apply the sunscreen every two hours, especially if playing in water. However, don’t forget to make sure you have written permission from parents or guardians before applying anything to children.

Heat stroke is another potential risk. To help children avoid potential heat stroke encourage them to drink water throughout the day both while inside and outside. If you aren't in an area with access to water fountains, you should invest in water bottles for your children. Also, while outdoors, try to stay in the shade as much as possible. If the day is hot or humid, you may need to plan indoor activities instead.
