News: Strategies for Employee Onboarding, Retention and Development
The Preschool Podcast Interviews ProSolutions Training President Carla RoggWhen do you think onboarding an employee actually begins and ends?
"If you’re not starting before day one, then you’ve already lost in the whole onboarding process,” said ProSolutions Training President Carla Rogg. "Because it’s so important how that employee feels on their very first day of employment. A lot of people think that onboarding, after they’ve come in, they’re done after the first day or two.”
Carla was interviewed on the topic of Employee Onboarding, Retention & Development on The Preschool Podcast presented by HiMama.
Onboarding a new employee isn’t just a quick tour of your center and calling it a day — it starts from their first interview and takes anywhere from 6 months to a year to get them fully assimilated into their new environment.
In the interview, Carla gives advice on how to successfully onboard a new employee, so they are engaged and committed to their job. She shares two helpful strategies for successful onboarding.
The first is tactical — making sure that you are checking all of the boxes on HR policies, taking care of the legal, and making sure the employee is trained properly.
The second strategy is more emotional. It’s about how the employee feels about their job.
Carla discusses how you have to be very intentional. You want to ask yourself, "What positive emotional experiences do we want our new employees to have?” And you really can’t leave this to chance.
She also talks about professional development as a critical component of employee onboarding. Professional development supports emotional objectives and allows the employee to feel valued and supported as they grow and develop.
